Week One Image

No Pooping Sign

Describe what it is: A brown and white park sign.

Describe its function
: Telling people that if they are walking their dog it must be on a leash and that it can't poop in the park, or that if they do the owner must pick it up and throw it away.

Describe where you saw it
: My family and I saw it when we went to Boston/New York in the summer of 2006, it was in one of the public parks by the Capital.

Discuss the style of the design & typography
: This would probably fall under the category of pictograph. No typography, but we can understand what it is saying with the circle with the slash through it. It's on a brown painted piece of wood with white as the pictograph color, all on a white pillar.

Discuss the quality of the artwork
: The artwork looks as if a 3rd grader could have drawn it. Very elementary like, not very detailed.

Discuss what attracted you to the piece
 (use adjectives).
Describe how it relates to what we have discussed or read: When I first saw this park sign I laughed, because it's so elementary and to the point. The sign stood out because it was on a white pillar with a good contrast color (brown) as the background for the pictograph/sign. This piece relates to what we learned this week because it is a basic for of communication; a pictograph with little or no detail and to the point.

  1. I love the twist on the traditional 'man' pictograph. But it's interesting how something like a circle with a line can mean 'no.' How did that come about?

  2. The pictograph in this sign coveys a very clear message. The sign is very bold and direct, which is good so there would be no misinterpretations of the message.

  3. This pictograph is interesting. It's actually pretty funny. I've never seen this before. It's simple and straight to the point, so it communicates well.

  4. I enjoy this sign quite a lot. Can I please have the address of where this was so I can go steal it? Thanks in advance,.. :)
When you mentioned how simple this pictograph is and how easy it is to understand the while circle with a line it, it got me thinking. I don't think it would be easy for just anyone to understand this symbol. An image or symbol doesn't have a meaning until we give it one. It's quite possible someone in Timbuctu doesn't know what a circle with a line through it signifies. Even in type, LOL doesn't have a known meaning until we give it one.
I enjoy how suggestive this image is. They even have the dog arching it's back to signify it taking a crap. Awesome. Good choice for an image this week, it certainly relates to what we discussed in class.

  5. This sign made me giggle a little. It gets the point across with simple images and symbols without words, which is what we talked about. It may not be pretty, but people who see it will definitely get the idea.
