Week Two Image

Alphabet Magnets

Describe what it is: This image is of black and white letter and symbol magnets. But since they all are grouped together they look like modern art.

Describe its function: Besides being pretty and interesting to look at, these are magnets! You can use them to decorate your refrigerator and hold important pictures and notes too.

Describe where you saw it: I saw this image on this website, hollysplate.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html, which I found from google. She took the image from cb2. She also had a lot of other interesting images.

Discuss the style of the design & typography: This is a modern twist on the alphabet. The design and font of the magnets are black and white; white background with black letters and symbols or the reverse. The font is quite bold and the design is the images cropped to be more interesting.

Discuss the quality of the artwork: The art work is of good quality. Everything is very neat and crisp. Even though the letters and symbols are cropped and may not be legible, they create an overall modern art feel.

Discuss what attracted you to the piece
(use adjectives). Describe how it relates to what we have discussed or read: I was attracted to this piece the same way the blogger from
hollysplate.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html was. It is a modern twist on the alphabet and old magnets that were used during the 70s. Its very modern and interesting to look at. And it's not like little kid colorful magnets... they are designed well and are very striking.

  1. I like the way that the letters are visually interesting on their own but also interact with each other as a whole to create something entirely knew [as you put it, modern art]. I think this was the case with illuminated manuscripts. Letters in textura are beautiful on there own but when they are put together, form this beautiful woven texture that can be art in itself.

  2. I think each individual letter looks very interesting because of the way positive and negative space was used. The designs are very simple, yet they're attractive and bold.

  3. As a fan of modern art, I really like these magnets,... a lot. I think it's very interesting how each individual magnet is fun to look at- mainly because of the intense cropping and the use of positive and negative space, but once you put them all together, it really does seem like a work of art. I wonder what it would look like if the magnets were of a different shape, or even if they were two different colors instead of black and white. These magnets remind me of something one of my old professors at UNI once said- "Everything looks good in a grid." I believe this is true because for some reason our eyes are attracted to uniform images. This one is being brave because the magnets aren't exactly in straight lines, but are crooked and tilted in various directions.

  4. I think this is a cool example of the use of the alphabet as art and not just as a way to build words. The black and white color scheme keeps it clean and simple while the way the letters are cropped and angled keeps the eyes moving and the viewer interested.
